I Almost Let Fear Win—But Then This Happened…

I’ve never done this before. I’m not good enough. I don’t have the resources. I’m going to embarrass myself. This is going to be too hard to pull off…
These are things I’m telling myself when I had the idea to develop The QuEST—My documentary series on small businesses.
I found myself battling with feelings of inadequacy as I’m comparing myself to other creatives.
Feelings of fear about stepping into unknown territory.
Doubts about my idea and creative skills.
As a creative, a professional, or even as a leader in any capacity—These are thoughts and feelings that we all face at times.
There’s a voice in your head that’s trying to convince you that you can’t do it.
But what I’ve grown to understand is…
This voice, no matter how loud it may seem…IS A LIAR.
Do the thing that intimidates you.
Don’t let the fact that you’ve never done something before, stop you from doing it.
In spite of the disempowering thoughts I had about starting the documentary project…I did it anyway.
I stopped focusing on the difficulty in the opportunity and instead focused on the opportunity in the difficulty.
I saw the series as a way to support local businesses and educate aspiring entrepreneurs instead of a spotlight of embarrassment waiting to shine on me.
I faced my fears and something impactful was created—We are helping to build awareness around entrepreneurs that are doing amazing work within communities and sharing the stories of small businesses.
We are gearing up to produce our third season and continue our efforts to support local businesses…All because I didn’t allow the voice in my head to stop me from pursuing something new.
Here’s the lesson in this experience…
What you fear but never face will always control you.
But, there’s a special kind of strength that you develop when you do the thing that scares you.
Don’t run away from what makes you uncomfortable, accept the challenge to expand your capabilities.
When you deeply believe that you can always grow and improve, you’ll position yourself to accomplish anything you set your mind on.
WAYS TO TAKE ACTION:
Before you convince yourself that you “can’t” do something—Ask these 2 questions:
Are you assuming you’re incapable simply because you’ve never done it before?
In what ways can you grow and adapt to achieve the task at hand?
What often stunts progress is not that we can’t do certain things, it’s us ignoring our own potential to grow and scale our lives.
Take a moment to remind yourself today that you can always BE better, DO greater, and BECOME more—Have the courage to expand your capabilities.
