If you're leading a business, building a brand, or trying to create something meaningful—how you show up matters more than you think.
In moments of uncertainty, frustration, or resistance, the real difference isn’t just in what you do, but in the mindset you bring.
Today, I’m going to share with you a story that reminds us that leadership starts internally, not just externally.
If you're ready to stop reacting to life and start shaping it—keep reading.
Empowering conversation with a friend…
Last week, I visited a small business owner named Steven.
I met him at his studio while he was getting ready to open for the day.
His energy was low—you could feel it.
Sales had been down, he was discouraged, and unsure of how to turn things around.
We started talking through some strategies, but I told him the most important shift wasn’t tactical—it was mental.
As we talked, he walked over to adjust the A/C and said: “What can I do to shift my mindset about this?”
I paused and told him: “You can’t solve a problem with the same mindset that created it. You have to change your perspective—set the tone for your thoughts, just like you set the temperature in this room.”
He nodded. I could tell it landed.
So I shared something a mentor once told me—and now I want to pass it on to you:
You’re either a thermometer…or a thermostat.
There are two types of people:
The thermometer — who reflects the temperature around them.
The thermostat — who sets the temperature for everyone else.
Think about it...
When pressure builds, when challenges arise, when creativity stalls, or when the day doesn't go as planned—Do you let your environment dictate your energy, your focus, and your actions?
Or do you take ownership of how you show up?
Because here’s the truth:
Thermometers react.Thermostats lead.
As an ambitious and impactful leader—you can’t afford to wait for perfect conditions. You have to create them.
That starts by being intentional about the energy you bring into your work, your interactions, and your daily routines.
So today, ask yourself:
Are you adjusting to the environment of your life…or are you setting the tone for it?
The power to influence your world starts with how you choose to lead yourself.
Every day, you have the choice to reflect your environment…or to shape it.
So no matter what challenges or obstacles you face this week…As you’re working towards improving yourself and enhancing the quality of your life—Be the one who sets the tone.
WAYS TO TAKE ACTION:
Set your tone before your environment sets it for you. Before your day starts tomorrow (and every day this week), write down three ways you want to show up—your energy, your mindset, and your intention.
Then hold yourself to that, no matter what’s happening around you.
Shift one environment this week.Whether it's a team meeting, within your family/inner circle, or even on socials online—show up with intentional energy. Be the one who uplifts, leads, or encourages action. Watch how others begin to rise to the tone you set.
Reply below and let me know—What’s one area of your life or work where you need to flip from thermometer to thermostat mode?
